Badger Meter has completed its acquisition of UDlive, a UK provider of sewer line monitoring technology, adding a wastewater network intelligence platform to its BlueEdge water management portfolio. Terms were not disclosed.

The target brings low-power sensors and analytics software used to monitor sewer systems in real time, a niche that sits adjacent to Badger Meter’s core metering and network monitoring business. The company said UDlive will be integrated alongside SmartCover, its existing sewer and lift station monitoring offering. That pairing gives Badger Meter a stronger position on both sides of the Atlantic, with SmartCover established in the US and UDlive holding a meaningful footprint in the UK.

This is less about geographic expansion alone than about product density. Utilities are under pressure to detect overflows earlier, reduce field labor, and justify capital spending with better operational data. Sewer networks remain one of the least digitized parts of water infrastructure, yet they carry some of the highest regulatory and service risks. By buying UDlive rather than building a competing platform from scratch, Badger Meter shortens development time and adds installed relationships in a market where procurement cycles are long and switching costs rise once sensors and analytics are embedded in daily operations.

The move also reflects a broader shift in industrial and infrastructure M&A toward software-enabled assets that can lift margins and create recurring revenue. Acquire.fyi data shows manufacturing deal value has climbed to $8.7 billion year to date, even as volume held flat at 33 transactions, suggesting buyers are still willing to pay for assets that add differentiated technology and defensible end-market exposure.

For Badger Meter, the immediate test is integration discipline. Sewer monitoring is attractive because it turns compliance pain into a budget priority, but utilities buy reliability before they buy vision. If the company can unify SmartCover and UDlive into a coherent operating platform, it will have a stronger case to sell broader BlueEdge deployments into municipal accounts. Competitors in water tech should take note. The battleground is moving beyond meters and into the software layer that shapes how utilities manage entire networks.
