Boomi said it has signed a letter of intent to acquire Lunar.dev, a startup focused on AI gateway and Model Context Protocol, or MCP, infrastructure, in an undisclosed deal that would deepen the company’s push into governed enterprise AI. The target’s software manages how AI agents and applications connect to large language models and enterprise systems, with controls around routing, policy enforcement, observability, and cost.
The timing matters. Enterprises are no longer asking whether to deploy generative AI. They are confronting a harder operational problem: who controls agent behavior once models are connected to internal data, APIs, and business workflows? Boomi is betting that integration alone is no longer enough. Customers want a control plane.
Lunar.dev gives Boomi a way to sit in the middle of that traffic. That position is valuable. It lets Boomi govern prompts and responses, monitor downstream actions, and enforce where AI workloads run across public cloud, private cloud, on premises, and sovereign environments. For a company with more than 1,000 managed connectors, according to the press release, the acquisition extends its role from moving data between systems to policing how AI touches those systems.
This also looks defensive. Integration vendors face the risk of being abstracted away as model providers, hyperscalers, and application companies build their own agent frameworks. By adding an MCP gateway, Boomi can argue that it owns the enterprise-grade layer that makes those tools usable in regulated environments. That is a stronger position than simply offering another orchestration feature.
The market backdrop is mixed. Acquire.fyi data shows technology M&A volume is down 12.3% year over year, even as median deal size has risen 38.5%, suggesting buyers are becoming more selective and paying up for assets tied to durable platform control. Lunar.dev fits that pattern. It is not a scale acquisition. It is an infrastructure wedge.
Expect rivals in integration, API management, and security to respond with similar moves around AI gateways, policy engines, and agent observability. As enterprises consolidate vendors, the winners will be the ones that can prove not just connectivity, but permissioned connectivity. In AI, that distinction is quickly becoming the product.
